Anesthesia is absolutely vital to the surgical process, but waking up from it can cause breathing problems, heart problems, and presentation of surgical side effects that were not evident while the anesthesia was in effect. Nurses in this specialty are trained to monitor the patient’s metrics as they come out of the medication, paying special attention to breathing, heart rate, the incision, and signs of internal bleeding. PACU nurses must be ready to react to any problem after the surgery.
